Now, having such ideas in mind, let’s have a look at some more examples on how to use these prepositions of movement:

• When I travel, I’m afraid of the moment when the plane goes up (takes off) and when it comes down (lands).

Quando viajo, tenho medo do momento em que o avião sobe (decola) e desce (aterrissa).

• Your true friends aren’t the ones who are with you when you are going up, but the ones who don’t leave when you are going down.

Seus verdadeiros amigos não são aqueles que estão com você quando você está subindo, e sim aqueles que não vão embora quando você está descendo.

• My cat has just got up that tree!

Meu gato acabou de subir naquela árvore!

• My uncle is a pilot. He says he loves it when he’s flying over the ocean.

Meu tio é piloto. Ele diz que adora quando está voando sobre o oceano.

• I hate controlling people. I stay away from them.

Eu odeio gente controladora. Fico longe delas.

• I am going toward (or “towards”) the station. Do you need a ride?

Eu estou indo no sentido da estação. Precisa de uma carona?

• As soon as I drove past the mall, I saw the store you had told me about.

Assim que passei pelo shopping, eu vi a loja que você tinha me falado.

• The birds keep flying into and out of the small house I have built for them.

• Elizabeth is that woman who is coming out of the room.

• Get into the car. I’ll drive you home.

• There is a good coffee shop across the street.

Tem uma boa cafeteria do outro lado da rua.

• The sunlight is gently coming through the window.

A luz do sol está entrando suavemente pela janela.

• I’ve just seen a cockroach flying through the window!

Acabei de ver uma barata voando pela janela!

• There’s plenty of water running beneath this soil.

Há bastante água correndo por baixo desse solo.

• Canada’s largest city, Toronto, has a whole new city beneath its streets.

Toronto, a maior cidade do Canadá, tem toda uma nova cidade por baixo das suas ruas.

• Just go along this avenue and you’ll soon see a gas station.

Siga por essa avenida e você logo verá um posto de gasolina.
